ANDY DE FIETS: LETTER TO ROBIN KINROSS

BY PAUL HAWORTH AND SAM DE GROOT

PUBLISHED BY TRUE TRUE TRUE, JANUARY 2009

ANDY DE FIETS: LETTER TO ROBIN KINROSS is a book I wrote with Sam de Groot.

Sam is a graphic designer

--the cover of the book is made from real envelope paper, referencing the contents,
which are written in the form of a letter to Robin Kinross – there you have form and
content ingeniously united…quite simply, it’s graphic design in a nutshell—

and Sam runs TRUE TRUE TRUE which published the book.

This is me and Sam at the TRUE TRUE TRUE NEW NEW NEW

book launch - De Nieuwe Anita, Amsterdam Thursday 29th January 2009 - it was a really nice night

The idea came for it when me and Sam were living together over a couple summers in Amsterdam. (Summers in Amsterdam – they’re lovely!)

me, Nick Borel, Sam - we're brainstorming - Nick features in the book as a shoplifter

Until then I hadn’t really been exposed to (nor thought a great deal about) graphic design.

Binding, fonts, layout, printing…you’re aware of these things - of course you are – but only a graphic designer can reveal their full and, at times, terrifying implications.

printing, binding

(You know, it’s strange, be it graphic design, banking, art, acting – the players all live lives in their bubbles, self-involved, self-invented…for the outsider insight proves fascinating, a source of ridicule, bewilderment, intrigue, boredom.)

Robin Kinross is a writer and publisher – he runs Hyphen Press – he makes excellent books, his writing is concise, direct, provocative and smart. The book is a letter to him from Andy de Fiets, a young graphic designer.

In a roundabout way, ANDY DE FIETS: LETTER TO ROBIN KINROSS is a comedy, a tribute to graphic design and a response to that age-old question:

'What are you going to do with your life?'
