book launch - De Nieuwe Anita, Amsterdam Thursday 29th January 2009 - it was a really nice night
The
idea came for it when me and Sam were living together over a couple summers in
Amsterdam. (Summers in Amsterdam – they’re lovely!)
me, Nick Borel, Sam
-
we're brainstorming - Nick features in the book as a shoplifter
Until
then I hadn’t really been exposed to (nor thought a great deal about) graphic
design.
Binding,
fonts, layout, printing…you’re aware of these things - of course you are –
but only a graphic designer can reveal their full and, at times, terrifying
implications.

(You
know, it’s strange, be it graphic design, banking, art, acting – the players
all live lives in their bubbles, self-involved, self-invented…for the outsider
insight proves fascinating, a source of ridicule, bewilderment, intrigue,
boredom.)
Robin Kinross
is a writer and publisher – he runs Hyphen Press – he makes excellent books,
his writing is concise, direct, provocative and smart. The book is a letter to
him from Andy de Fiets, a young graphic designer.
In a roundabout way, ANDY DE FIETS: LETTER TO ROBIN KINROSS is a comedy, a tribute to graphic design and a response to that age-old question:
'What are you going to do with your life?'
